Sol-Rec 2 Objectives
The objective of Sol-Rec 2 is to develop and implement innovative sorting and recycling strategies for dealing with multi-layer material waste containing mixtures of polymer and metal. Novel sorting techniques including digital watermarks will be trialled to facilitate rapid and efficient sorting of multi-layer packaging. The project team will leverage experience from working in the field of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents to develop a toolbox of novel green solvent systems that will delaminate these multi-layer materials and selectively dissolve specific polymers enabling efficient separation and recovery of the multiple components of packaging materials. Sol-Rec2 will ultimately produce high purity plastics and aluminium for reuse – providing recyclers with a valuable income stream, minimising the environmental impact and carbon footprint associated with virgin plastics production and bauxite mining/refining whilst also making a valuable contribution to the circular economy

European plastics converters demand by applications
According to the latest available data from Plastics Europe, a leading European trade association, In 2021, packaging and building & construction by far represented the largest enduse markets for plastics in the EU27+3. The third biggest enduse market is the automotive sector
* It's important to note that these percentages may vary from year to year and between countries, and that the production of plastic waste in each sector depends on many factors, such as consumption, production, regulation, technology, etc
